The IDDSI framework (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) provides a globally recognised system for describing the texture and consistency of foods and beverages. Using IDDSI makes it easier for healthcare professionals to communicate clearly and consistently about food and drink thickness levels, improving safety for individuals with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
The goal of IDDSI is to establish standardised terminology worldwide when referring to food textures and drink thickness. By using objective testing methods within the IDDSI framework, healthcare teams can confidently identify and communicate the correct consistency level for patients.
The system improves patient safety by using consistent terminology, colours, and numerical levels, helping to reduce the risk of choking and aspiration. The IDDSI framework includes eight levels (0–7), each represented by a specific number and colour code.
