BPA changes and school tableware: what schools need to know

13th April 2026 | Education

Schools may have seen discussion around changing BPA regulations in food contact materials. For most schools, the key message is simple: there is no need for concern, and there is no need to make any changes now.

Products already in use can continue to be used with confidence, and schools do not need to replace existing tableware simply because regulations are changing. In the EU, the rules include transition periods for repeat-use articles rather than requiring immediate replacement, and Great Britain has been consulting on a similar direction.

There is no need to replace existing tableware

If your current Harfield products are in use and performing as they should, you can continue using them as normal.

This is not a situation where schools need to review all existing tableware or make immediate changes. The practical position is straightforward: there is no need to do anything now. The EU transition allows repeat-use final food contact articles manufactured using BPA and compliant with the previous rules to be first placed on the market until 20 July 2026, and those first placed on the market in that period may remain on the market until 20 July 2027.

If you need replacement tableware

If you are buying replacement tableware, polycarbonate remains the best option while stocks are available.

For schools that would prefer a BPA-free option, copolyester is the best choice. It offers a high-quality, durable alternative that is well suited to the demands of school meal service.

Harfield is prepared

Harfield has been preparing for this change and will continue to support schools with practical, reusable tableware solutions designed for education.

Our focus remains the same:

  • dependable products
  • clear guidance
  • durable solutions for everyday school use
  • straightforward replacement options when needed

The simple message for schools

The message for schools is clear:

There is no need to replace existing tableware.
There is no need to take action now.
Polycarbonate remains the best option while stocks last.
