BPA changes and healthcare tableware: what you need to know

You may have seen discussion around changing BPA regulations in food contact materials. For most healthcare settings, the key message is simple: there is no need for concern, and there is no need to make any changes now.

Products already in use can continue to be used with confidence, and there is no need to replace existing tableware simply because regulations are changing. In the EU, the rules include transition periods for repeat-use articles rather than requiring immediate replacement, and in Great Britain the FSA has consulted on a similar direction.

There is no need to replace existing tableware

If your current Harfield products are in use and performing as they should, you can continue using them as normal.

This is not a situation where hospitals, care homes or other healthcare providers need to review all existing tableware or make immediate changes. The practical position is straightforward: there is no need to do anything now. Under the EU transition, repeat-use final food contact articles manufactured using BPA and compliant with the previous rules may be first placed on the market until 20 July 2026, and those first placed on the market within that transition may remain on the market until 20 July 2027.

If you need replacement tableware

If you are buying replacement tableware, polycarbonate remains the best option while stocks are available.
